Hydrothermal alteration can result in pore pressurization and volcano instability

چکیده

Abstract The collapse of a volcanic flank can be destructive and deadly. Hydrothermal alteration is common to volcanoes worldwide thought promote volcano instability by decreasing rock strength. However, some laboratory studies have shown that not all reduces Our new data for altered rhyodacites from Chaos Crags (Lassen center, California, USA) show pore- crack-filling mineral precipitation reduce porosity permeability increase strength, Young's modulus, cohesion. A significant reduction in permeability, as much four orders magnitude, will inhibit fluid circulation create zones high pore pressure. We explored the consequences pressurization on stability using large-scale numerical modeling. Figure 1. Extent of widespread Osceola Mudflow and Electron mudflow deposits from Mount Rainier. These deposits contain hydrothermally derived clay minerals and likely originated from flank collapses. Modified from Scott and Vallance (1995) and Vallance and Scott (1997). ABSTRACT Catastrophic collapses of steep volcano flanks threaten many populated regions, and understanding factors that promo...

Volcano Instability and Lateral Collapse

Active volcanoes are dynamically evolving structures, the life-cycles of which are punctuated by episodes of flank instability and lateral failure. Such behaviour is now recognised as ubiquitous and lateral collapses are estimated to have occurred at least four times a century over the past 500 years. In the Andes, three quarters of the large volcanic edifices have experienced collapse, while o...

Optimization of a pressurization methodology for extracting pore-water.

Sediment toxicity can be assessed by conducting pore-water toxicity assays with standard water column organisms. Several methods have been developed for sampling pore-water. Centrifugation and pressurization methods are recommended when large volumes of pore-water are required to perform toxicity assays. Nevertheless, these methods involve sediment transportation and storage in laboratory, whic...
